IOR's FINGER

The image to the left is Ior VII.  He is the great x 6 grandson of Ior the first.  The first Ior, of course was the first of Henry V's bowmen to hoist his middle finger at the retreating French.  Ior's name became entrenched in history in the unlikeliest of ways. He built a fence, you see.  The old English word for "fence" is "Wic." People came from far and wide to see Ior's wic. In time, a small village grew around his home with everyone building wics. The village came to be known as Ior's Wic. In time, with a lot of lazy enunciation, the name was shortened to IorWic and later to Iorc. The spelling was updated many times and today is represented by "York." And that is why in New York, Ior the first's famous symbol is so commonly seen everywhere. It's unfortunate that the first Ior's first Wic has been almost completely forgotten, remembered only in esoteric locations like this one,

Before the War of 1812, British ships of war were stopping American ships at sea and

conscripting American Seamen who had immigrated to the United States and had become

naturalized citizens of their new country.  When the United States State Department objected

to this unethical practice, the United Kingdom replied, "Once an Englishman, always an

Englishman," and continued the practice.   This was one of the main causes of the War of

1812.

Ior's Finger Part II

It has come down to us through our families that after the Battle of Agincourt a competition arose among Henry's archers. Some chose to draw the Long Bow using two fingers while others, trying to out-macho the rest, started doing it with only one finger.  Among them, some had the inclination to use three fingers - resulting in a sort of between-the-lines, middle finger salute.

The two fingered group pronounced that they could pluck the yew with greater accuracy using two fingers while the single fingered guys swore they were better shots for the reduced friction from using only one finger.  The archers using three fingers shrugged all this off and endured the razzing, all the while achieving accuracy in their plucksmanship equal to the others.

For quit a while, the single fingered shooters achieved dominance, if only in their own minds. The Historic, Commemorative T-Shirt featured to the left, here, is dedicated to their memory.
